Every song has a story.
Who are the people that have always been there for you?
"One Boot Off" was written to help us reflect on, and appreciate, the deepest and most meaningful relationships in our lives.
The journey from real-life experience to song release of "One Boot Off" began with real-world experiences with people that I have always been able to count on. I am sure you have those kinds of people in your life too.
In writing this song, I was greatly impacted by the phrase, "One boot on and one boot off, moments of living, some good, some rough." It speaks to those defining moments that don't go our way, but the people who stand with us help make the journey special and the lessons we learn indelible.
When I wrote those words, I knew that they had to be part of a song from a grateful heart.
I hope you enjoy the song.

*Verse 1:* (perspective of adult child)
That photo that hangs up on the wall,
Me as a child, we were having a ball.
On that merry-go round,
Falling together on the ground.
I had one boot on and one boot off,
That smile on your face says it all.
*Verse 2* (perspective of the parent)
You were always full of joy,
You could turn rocks into toys.
Playing hard that day was so much fun,
How we ran and laughed in the morning sun.
You had one boot on and one boot off,
That smile on your face says it all.
*Chorus*
Oh, yes one boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
One boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
*Verse 3* (perspective of adult child)
That time years later,
Leaving the house…see ya later.
Keys in the car, stepping on the gas,
Didn’t see that tree, just heard the crash.
*Verse 4* (perspective of the parent)
And I was first on the scene,
I could hear you scream.
I pulled you out before you were lost,
Your life saved with one boot on and one boot off.
*Verse 5* (perspective of adult child)
That time I fled for my life,
A relationship of bitter strife.
You rescued me…hearing your voice,
Again my hero, always my first choice.
You cheered me up with a laugh.
And I was left with nothin’ but one boot on and one boot off.
*Chorus*
Yeah one boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
One boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
*Verse 6* (perspective of adult child)
Today looking at that photo that hangs up on the wall,
Me as a child, we were having a ball.
I had one boot on and one boot off,
That smile on your face says it all.
You softly say you’re in pain.
Taking off your boot,
Slowly your breathing comes to an end.
No part of our life would I amend.
*Chorus*
Yeah one boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
One boot on and one boot off,
Moments of living, some good, some rough.
*Verse 7* (perspective of adult child)
That photo that hangs up on the wall…with one boot on and one boot off,
Lying there, you’re at peace…with one boot on and one boot off.
A tearful goodbye but I’m standing tall,
You made it to Heaven, the smile on your face says it all.
With one boot on and one boot off.
*Outro* (perspective of the parent)
I’ll be waiting in Heaven in the Son’s bright light,
No more of life’s battles will we have to fight.
And I’ll meet you on the streets of gold,
With both boots on and your hand to hold.
