Going Broke Saving Money (Radio Version): The Backstory

Every song has a story. "Going Broke Saving Money" has a unique story that was nearly 30 years in the making. The journey of this song from a piece of paper to your audio device is shared below.

FROM REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE TO A COUNTRY SONG

The journey from real-life experience to song release of "Going Broke Saving Money" began in 1995.

My wife and I had just returned to Maine from living in Iceland, where we had spent nearly a year while I completed my Ph.D. in Political Science as a Fulbright Scholar.

Being a graduate student, we only had money for yard sales as we tried to establish our home and start a family.

One day I realized we were going broke "saving" money at all of those yard sales. Other people's stuff suddenly started piling up in our house!

I wrote down the phrase, "Going broke saving money" and knew it would be a song one day. That day took four kids, five states, three countries, two continents, countless moves, and twenty-nine years to come to fruition.

I hope you enjoy the song.

Sing and dance...it's that kind of song.

And, yes, we still like yard sales--but we learned a valuable lesson...the difference between frugality and stewardship.

*Verse 1:*

Another beautiful sunny weekend day

Wanna take the boat to the lake and play

She gives me the look that says, “No way!”

*Verse 2:*

With the paper in one hand, a wad of Lincolns in the other

She’s talkin’ fast and furious on the phone with her dear old mother

I’m just gonna give the boat keys to my younger brother

*Bridge:*

Yeah, I’m going broke while she’s saving me money

The stuff’s piling high, can’t ya see it honey?

She spots another sale down a dusty dirty road

And I’m all out of rope tryin’ to secure this heavy load

*Chorus:*

Yeah, I’m going broke while she’s saving me money

The garage is so full it ain’t even funny

It’s been a long day and I’m glad to be home

Yeah, we’ve got more stuff than the Emperor of Rome

*Outro:*

Yeah, I’m going broke while she’s saving me money

The stuff’s piling high, can’t ya see it honey?

The garage is so full it ain’t even funny

Yeah, I’m going broke while she’s saving me money.
